Animefringe Reviews:
Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team: Miller's Report DVD
By Ever Cheung

By this time I'm sure many of you otakus out there must have noticed the recent flood of Gundam series coming out in the domestic market. They're everywhere, ranging from the digitally remastered original Gundam TV series first aired in 1979, to well-made OVA series such as Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. Competing for a share of the market is the movie version of the Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team OVA series - Miller's Report. Set in the same time period as the original Gundam series in UC0079 (more commonly known as the period of the "One Year War"), Miller's Report is a small side story branched off of the original Gundam 08th MS Team, basically a short summary of the OVA series with a disappointingly small amount of new material in between.

The story began immediately after the return of the commanding officer of the 08th Gundam MS team stationed near the front line of the Earth Federation Forces on Earth, after his mysterious disappearance during an encounter with a new Zeon prototype mobile armor (MA). Consequently, as an add-on side story that took place near the middle of the original OVA story line, Miller's Report, as its name implies, focuses mainly on the conversation between Alice Miller, an intelligence officer from the Intel division of the Earth Federation Forces, and Shiro Amada himself. With his future now clouded by his uncertainty about how he should proceed forward as an officer of the Federation forces after his encounter with the girl who had been on his mind since his arrival on Earth. Amada began to slowly reveal all that he knew about the prototype... and his relationship with Aina, who piloted the prototype.

If you saw the original 08th MS Team OVA series and are currently looking for some more Gundam mecha action, I have to strongly advise you to just skip this one and try either Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory or Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in a Pocket. With only 10 minutes worth of new footage and the rest entirely on re-runs, Miller's Report failed miserably as a stand-alone side story or as a competent summary movie. It only offers approximately 40% of what the original OVA series had.

In addition, it also failed to give Alice Miller enough time to even develop a strong hold (personality, personal background, etc) in the story itself. To put it in simple terms, Alice Miller seems more like a cardboard cutout who can speak. If you feel like you just "gotta have it", at least rent it or borrow it from somebody first. If you still want it after that, go for it... but that's unlikely. Even with the pleasant extra of the original ending song created specifically for this movie, for huge Gundam fans like myself, buying Miller's Report is still, without a doubt, what I would consider a simple waste of money.
