Welcome to the World of The Hakkenden - Legend of the Dog Warriors -
What is the Hakkenden? Based on the classic, long cherished fantasy tale written by Bakin Takizawa (Kyokute) in the early 19th Century. "Hakkenden" (meaning "The Tale of Eight Dogs") has been adapted to Kabuki, live action movies, puppet shows and other different forms of entertainment, however, "The Hakkenden - The Legend of the Dog Warriors -" is the first animation adaptation.
Story of "The Hakkenden"
In 1457, a cursed and desperate warlord promises his dog, Yatsufasa that if the dog can deliver the head of the enemy's leader, then Yatsufasa could marry the warlords daughter - Princess Fuse, Yatsufasa fulfilled his mission, and Princess Fuse submitted to the marriage until she learned of the curse on her family and that she was pregnant with eight human/dog mongrels. Princess Fuse then killed herself, but her eight spirit beads separated out into the sky, only to appear a generation later in the possession of eight young warriors. "The Hakkenden" is the epic tale of the violent, bloody fate that brings these warriors together to break the age-old curse.
